Boating Tips

In my life I've enjoyed boating of all types, from speed boats to sailing to canoeing. Since most of my experience with boating is in a canoe or kayak, that is what this page focuses on.

Dan and I like getting in our boats and going for a paddle. This has made for some interesting excursions over the years. One time we were portaging our canoe at a lake in CT. I tripped and fell into a beaver "scent mound". Beavers mark their territory by depositing a secretion on piles of mud. Not only was I covered in mud but I smelled like beaver butt! It was another trip down a WV river that I learned if someone tells you the canoe is sinking, it's probably safe to believe them...

If your new to boating (regardless of what type you choose to try) research it first. You can find everything online from what type of boat and accessories to buy to good places to boat. Learn the basic safety guidelines and boating rules (like wearing an approved, proper fitting pfd). If your boating with children teach them these things too. There is a great website specifically designed at kids to introduce boating and safety to them. The link can be found at the bottom of this page. Another good idea would be to take some lessons.

A lot of accidents could be prevented by being prepared. Have respect for the water and know your limitations. For example, a person may think they're in good physical shape so they can go white water kayaking without knowing anything about it. With no prior experience or knowledge, being physically fit doesn't mean you'll know how to maneuver in an extreme or emergency situation.

I don't believe it's a good idea to go canoeing/kayaking alone. However, when boating by yourself or even with others you should always let someone staying behind know what your plans are. A float plan is a good idea. The one designed by the US Coast Guard can be found in the links at the bottom of the page.

Here are some good boating links. They have articles on everything from how to roll a kayak to basic safety guidelines.
